A copy may be provided but often there isn't room, so you may need to use the one on the Catalogue disc. APDL has taken over DataStream and Arch Angel and, most recently, the DatafIle. Many discs previously supplied by these libraries are still available. See the files in the 'Read me 2' archive for details. -+-+- PRICES -+-+- U.K. Discs are £1.35 each, DD or HD. Most count as one point towards Bonus Discs. For every FIVE points you collect you get one bonus disc of your choice FREE. Where an item comprises two 800K discs or 1 x 1.6Mb disc the price is £1.75 for 2 x 800K or £1.50 for a single 1.6Mb. Either gives one Bonus Point. Europe Within European Postal Area £1.35 per disc but you need TEN Bonus Points for each free disc because of the extra postage Outside £1.35 per disc but with a surcharge of £1.00 per order and you Europe need TEN Bonus Points for each free disc. DO NOT deduct VAT, because it approximates to the additional post costs outside Europe, so the VAT component becomes the extra postage. Orders are normally sent 1st Class post or Airmail and dispatched the day they are received. Unless stated otherwise UK carriage is INCLUDED. If ordering on behalf of a school see the section 'Schools and Colleges' Make cheques or Postal Orders payable to APDL. Payment in Pounds Sterling drawn on U.K. bank, Sterling Eurocheque, Visa, Mastercard, Debit or Switch card. Outside Europe add £1.00 to total order price. If you pay by 'plastic' ensure the number and expiry date are correct. If you use the !Order program you enter your card details in the 'Name and Address' window. When you print an order paid for by plastic you MUST SIGN IT. We will not process unsigned credit card orders. If you send an order on disc enclose a signed note giving the card number and instructing us to debit your card. We accept cheques drawn on a MAJOR foreign bank in a MAJOR currency (Dollars, Franc, Mark, etc.) but there is a surcharge of £2 per cheque. Sorry, the bank charges for foreign cheques so I must pass part of this on. Bear in mind currency fluctuations if payment is not in Sterling. INVOICING - We normally operate on a 'cash with order' basis. VAT Receipts will ONLY be given if requested. If you want to be invoiced this is OK but UNLESS BY PRIOR AGREEMENT there are NO BONUS DISCS owing to the extra paperwork involved. There is a MINIMUM ORDER VALUE of £10.00 if payment is not included with the order. *** We reserve the right to decline any order without explanation *** _____ Reg. No. GB 668 0248 20 \ / /\ | Prices include VAT at 17.5%. As 99% of our customers \ / /__\ | aren't VAT registered they can ignore it. If you want \/ / \ | a VAT receipt ask WHEN YOU ORDER. Outside UK but within EC you must pay VAT at UK rate unless you are VAT registered and order on business stationary showing your VAT number. Outside EC the VAT element becomes the additional postage. This is roughly correct for most items we supply except things like hard discs. If you are a VAT exempt purchaser read the section 'Schools and Colleges' BEFORE sending an order with VAT deducted. ======================= ======================== O R D E R I N G ============================ ======================= There is a program called !Order on the catalogue disc. You can choose most itmes we sell with a mouse click and it will work out the prices, calculate Bonus points and print out your order. Most orders are despatched 1st class post within 24 hours of receipt, normally on the same day. Orders compiled using the !Order, !GIForder or !PCorder programs (printed or sent as a textfile on disc) are dealt with FIRST as they're easiest. Hand written orders for GIF or PC files get left til last, so if you want these and don't have a printer it's quicker if you send your order on disc. Sometimes packets go astray in the post. It can be the fault of the Post Office but it's more likely that it was wrongly addressed. PLEASE make sure your address is correct and, if it's handwritten, CLEARLY LEGIBLE. We sometimes get envelopes containing an order with no address, or even just coins and nothing else! If you use the !Order program you will see that your name and address is repeated at the bottom of the order. This is used as a return label to reduce mistakes so don't edit it out, it's there for a purpose. =============================== ===================== B O N U S P O I N T S ======================= =============================== It reduces costs if you send one big order rather than several small ones. When you make up your order most items give you a certain number of Bonus Points. For every FIVE points you collect (TEN outside UK) you get ONE FREE DISC. This means any 'normal' disc priced at £1.35. Sorry, no Bonus Discs where payment is not included with the order. Most discs count as ONE POINT so the number isn't shown as it's always one. If a different number of points is awarded this is indicated. This is ONE FREE disc for every FIVE ordered (ten outside UK), so you get six discs for £6.75 which works out at just over £1.12 per disc (£1.35 outside UK). On multi-disc sets Bonus Points for DD and HD versions may not be the same as post for HD discs is less. This is shown as (1/2 Bonus points) which would mean 1 point for the 800K version, 2 for the 1.6Mb. You can't save up Bonus Points from one order and add them to the next. ===================================== ================== C A T A L O G U E D I S C S ====================== ===================================== A catalogue disc normally costs 50p. If you enclose your old catalogue with your order it will be updated WITHOUT CHARGE (UK only). A new catalogue WITH AN ORDER costs 40p. Make sure you protect your catalogue if you return it for updating, don't just drop it into an envelope. Ideally re-use an old jiffy bag, but if you threw the last one away wrap the disc to protect it. Discs in ordinary envelopes often get damaged by Post Office machinery The catalogues are plain text files. As they change and are added to all the time it isn't possible to keep them up to date with fancy packaging. For the same reason we don't offer a printed catalogue. By the time it was printed it would be obsolete! Most customers prefer it this way. As everyone has !Edit it's simple to just browse or find anything you want with Edit's 'Find' facility. If you wish to print out a part or all of the catalogue you can. You can download the full catalogue or some parts if it (eg, latest hardware prices) from our web site at www.apdl.co.uk ================================= =================== C O M P A T I B I L I T Y ====================== ================================= There are three major versions of RISC-OS in circulation so there are sometimes compatibility problems. As an indication the character which follows each program name is used as a 'code' to indicate compatibility. - Not sure = OK with RO2/RO3 + RO2 program, works with RO3 but minor problems * RO2 only : RO3 only These codes were introduced when RO3 appeared to indicate older program which would not work with RO3. As we now have the RPC as well there is RO 3.5/3.6/3.7 to consider. RO2 compatibility is no longer checked as it has been declared obsolete, so the following two new codes are used - ~ Will NOT work on the RPC ^ Works OK on the RPC There isn't a code to indicate S/ARM compatibility, but almost all RPC compatible programs are OK on S/ARM, although you may have to uncrunch the !Runimage file or switch off the cache while it loads. I may use two codes where this is appropriate, eg. :~ means RO3 only, won't work on RPC or RO2. These are a GUIDE ONLY. Many older programs have not been checked on the RPC so the fact that no indication is given does not mean they do or don't work. Most well written applications are OK. ===================== ========================== U P D A T E S =========================== ===================== Discs may be updated with later versions of programs. To have yours updated return the ORIGINAL disc(s) plus 40p per disc. The disc must be returned IN GOOD CONDITION. Don't just throw it in a normal envelope and hope it survives. If possible re-use one of our padded envelopes or wrap it to protect it. We cannot update discs of 'individual' programs. =========================================== ================ S C H O O L S and C O L L E G E S ================= =========================================== We are happy to deal with schools and colleges and have many as customers, but disc prices are based on a 'cash with order' system to minimise paperwork. There is a MINIMUM ORDER of £10 if you do not send payment WITH YOUR ORDER. Invoices are enclosed with goods. Payment in full MUST be received within THIRTY DAYS. At the end of this time and each thirty days thereafter a reminder will be sent and the cost of this will be added to your original invoice at £6 per reminder. Once a reminder has been sent any outstanding amount will attract interest at 2% per month or any part of a month. If payment is not received within thirty days any concessionairy bonus discs sent with your order will be cancelled and charged at the normal rate. I'm sorry if this seems harsh, but in order to keep the prices we charge YOU low we must minimise our costs and we don't think it's fair to ask people who DO settle promptly to subsidise those that don't. If you want Bonus discs ensure your Bursar settles QUICKLY. Remember the minimum order is £10 and NO BONUS DISCS unless payment is included with the order or we have agreed you can have Bonus discs without prepayment. An alternative is to pay with a personal cheque/card and recover the (usually small) amount from petty cash. VAT DEDUCTION VAT exempt purchasers read this NOW!! Some institutions are VAT exempt purchasers and can deduct VAT from their orders. You MUST PROVIDE PROOF of your right to do this WHEN YOU ORDER. Orders sent with VAT deducted but without proof of your right to do so will have VAT added as we are obliged to do by Customs & Excise rules. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. With some items we act as 'agent' (eg. registered versions of Shareware programs) when VAT applies only to our part of the price and not to the total so you can't deduct the VAT. o------------------------------o | SHAREWARE | | If you use it - pay for it | o------------------------------o Most programs in the catalogue are Public Domain, although as Authors normally retain copyright they should properly be called 'Freeware'. Some are Shareware, and this is now more common and is a development I am keen to encourage. Shareware is NOT 'free software'. It is commercial software distributed on a 'try before you buy' basis. Software in this catagory requires separate payment to the Author as a Registration Fee if you make use of it. You may get additional items or improved versions when you Register. Sometimes payment should be made to a nominated charity instead of to the Author and this is often called 'Careware'. Please play fair with Shareware. Not only is it dishonest to use a Shareware program without Registering is it also very short sighted. If Shareware Authors don't receive payment for their work they will either stop writing programs for Acorn and write for PC's instead where users DO send money or 'sell out' to commercial software producers. Then you will find that a year later you must pay many times the registration fee to buy the same thing in a shrink wrapped package. =============================================== ================ W A R R A N T Y and G U A R A N T E E =============== =============================================== APDL makes no charge for PD programs or material. The cost of a disc is a copying and distribution fee. All material is supplied without warranty or guarantee as to fitness for purpose. Our guarantee is limited to the media. We try to check that programs work and do our best to help with problems but everything is supplied 'as is' and the only warranty is that offered by the Author. Descriptions are given in good faith but we may only try a program briefly so cannot guarantee accuracy APDL is merely the distributor. Most PD and all Shareware programs contain the name and address of the Author and while we may be able to contact him/her on your behalf it is normally better (and quicker) if you do so yourself. Look through the APDL_FAQ file first, you might find the answer to your problem there. Discs are checked for defects before despatch, but errors can appear, so if a disc has errors which stop any program or data from loading it will be replaced free of charge if you return it. Don't forget to include your name and address! We make every effort to ensure that programs and other material may be freely copied and distributed but it is often impossible to be certain of this, especially if material does not contain an identifying name and address. If you see any items in the catalogue which you know may not be freely distributed please inform us. ============================ ====================== A B O U T A.P.D.L. ========================== ============================ Our policy is to offer not the cheapest but the best service. Wherever possible material is obtained direct from the Author. We offer support to programmers because we realise that without them there wouldn't be any PD or Shareware. If you are a PD or Shareware Author please send us your material. If you see any of your programs in our catalogue we would be grateful for updates. We give special consideration to Authors so it will be worth your while. Most of our customers know that if a program doesn't appear in the catalogue it's worth asking - either we already have it or we can get it If you have not heard of APDL before I should point out that it was the first independent PD library for the Archimedes, that's why it doesn't have a clever name. The fact that it's still flourishing after all these years while others have vanished says more about the quality of our service than anything that I could add. ========================================================= ========= P U B L I C D O M A I N and S H A R E W A R E ========= ========================================================= Some people are uncertain what these terms mean so I shall explain VERY briefly. The PD Library part of APDL does NOT sell computer software (except for 'commercial' programs). What we do is to distribute other people's software, and the money you pay is a fee for copying, post and packing, discs etc. plus an overhead to cover the costs of running the library. We charge nothing for the actual programs, they aren't ours to sell. Public Domain is a precise term in the USA where it means the Author has given up ALL rights to it and placed it 'in the public domain'. There is no legal equivalent in Britain. Most so-called Public Domain should be termed 'Freeware'. This means the Author retains copyright but permits his/her work to be copied and used subject to conditions, usually that the name and copyright message must be retained, the program must be supplied intact and not used for financial gain. Such a message establishes Copyright and negates any 'this is public domain' statement. Shareware is commercial software. It is Copyright, but permission is given for it to be copied and distributed subject to some restrictions. If you acquire a copy of the program you are entitled to use it for a trial period, normally thirty days. If you use it after this time you are obliged to 'register'. This means sending a 'registration fee' to the Author. Details of how to do this and what benefits it brings will be contained somewhere within the program's instructions. Using a Shareware program outside the trial period or conditions is software piracy. It is an offence, both legally and morally, exactly the same as using a pirated copy of any other commercial software. The fee you pay to a library for a Shareware program does NOT give you any right to use the program. You are not paying for the program, just a distribution fee. If you continue to use it you MUST register with the Author. Please play fair with Shareware Authors. Many Shareware programs are as good as commercial packages and as they don't have the huge advertising and distribution overhead which makes up the larger part of the price of such programs they will cost you a lot less. If you don't pay the Author he/she will stop writing Shareware and we will all be losers. David Holden - A.P.D.L.
